Drawing from 2 Peter 1:5–9, he emphasizes the importance of continually adding to our faith: goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection, and love. When these virtues grow in us, they keep us effective and fruitful in our knowledge of Christ. Without them, we risk becoming spiritually shortsighted, forgetting the cleansing and freedom we have received from our past sins.
